Egyptian Walking Onions grow perennially in beds. The hardy bulbs set bulbils (bulblets) on stalks. Air-bound bulblets will sprout new smaller stalks, which fall over and replant themselves, hence the name Walking Onions. Tender young shoots and stems can be harvested as green onions in the spring. Small bulbs at the bottom can be harvested in fall and winter. The bulbils can be eaten, too, if not replanted. They can also be stored for a few months.
Plant them where you intend to have them for a long time. This vigorous and troublefree plant is hardy in zones 3-10.
Walking onions are a cross between Allium cepa, the cultivated onion, and Allium fistulosum, the Welsh onion.
