1970’s Oil On Board Portait Of Medicine Crow By Fred R. Lammert

Artist Fred R. Lammert was prolific in the 1970's, producing Western and Native American motif paintings, comic and paperback covers, and figurines; this painting most likely depicts iconic Native American scholar and activist Medicine Crow. I find the painting to be quite striking for a number of reasons, the first being the vibrant orange glow which makes it feel as if the subject is standing in front of a fire. There is an almost comic book-like whimsy in the exaggerated grooves of the his face, giving an impression of great weariness. Finally, the artist expertly uses focus in this work: the painting is somewhat fuzzy on the outside, and increasingly moves into sharper focus leading to the focal point of the subjects left eye. The painting is beautifully framed in hand-carved, solid wood.
