Written by Roger North detailing the lives of his three brothers, the most famous being Francis and Dudley North, both eminent political figures in the court of Charles II and James II.

Francis North, Baron Guilford, had been an noted lawyer and Justice of the Common Pleas before being appointed Lord Keeper of the Great Seal in 1683. He is notable for having sat as a judge on some of the Popish Plot trials where he was accused of excessive credulity in bowing to anti Catholic hysteria.

Dudley North was an English Merchant, politician and economist. He was knighted in 1683 and elected member of parliament in 1685. He held various positions due to his success and experience in trade, including commissioner of customs and later of the treasury.

Roger North was an English lawyer and biographer best known for this work and his own autobiography, regarded as key works in the understanding of the period and in particular the political and economical details of the times.
